Oppo- My garage door opener recently died, and as part of some home improvements this summer, i plan on upgrading the door (its a wooden door now that doesn’t fit great and is in kinda rough straight) and now replacing the opener. My only requirement is that it has a keypad for outside access.

when my opener finally fails, this is what i’m going with. it has a ryobiOne+ battery charger in it for power tools that can open the door even when the power is out.

Not to be that person, but are you even able to reach the opener if a car is parked under it? That can be tricky. Also, you can just pull the string and manually open and close it.

Neat idea, but all of my power tools are a different brand so not super functional for me.

Go with the main brands, like Chamberlain. My garage doors came with an off-brand for free, and they only lasted about 4 years. I replaced them with Chamberlains, with battery backup and wifi connectivity, and haven’t had any issues in the following 4 years.

Get the most HP you can so the motor is not overstressed. I picked 3/4 HP for my single stall doors, which are steel/foam doors. I have the doors balanced so you can open them with one finger, so I’m hoping the openers last forever.

I went with a belt model over a chain. They’re quieter, so if you have an attached garage, go that route. After my previous chain operators, I’m never going back.

Chamberlain quiet belt drive openers are nice. They have different bells and whistles so you can get internet access if you want to go nuts, or at least a battery backup. Had ours for over 5 years and no issue. I’ve had to replace the backup battery, but that’s been it this far. Nice and quiet and quick. We use ours as our entry to the house, so it gets a lot of cycles.

My folks have had their genie opener for more than 10 years, but you have to lube the screw drive and it gets noisey in the colder temps. But it works well, if still go with the chamberlain, or craftsman are also made by chamberlain as well, so if you can get a better price should be same thing.

The belt drives are awesome. So quiet and zero maintenance. I’ve had both chain and the genie screw drives, never again.

Oh, I think it’s a sorta dumb idea, to be honest. Anyone who can’t pull the string to manually open the door isn’t going to be able to climb a ladder and try and reach over a car to put in a battery pack either.

Chamberlain openers should all support a keypad at this point, and thankfully most of the generic remotes work with them as well. I have replace my 10 year old keypad as the buttons are starting to go. I picked up a generic replacement off Amazon for significantly less than the OEM Chamberlain one.

Classic Kinja- tried to reply to OP and it went to you. Also, doesnt it charge the battery and then use the battery only if the power goes out? Otherwise, i agree. I’d rather just manually open it (like i have been for the last month) then deal with putting the battery in, especially because the crosstrek would be centered dead center on it

Thanks for all the responses everyone! It looks like a max horsepower Chamberlain belt drive is the winner.
